Match report – SCC v Selsey CC 1st May 2016

SCC’s first game of the season under new captain Glen Stanford was at home to Selsey CC on a fine Bank Holiday Sunday and on an immaculately prepared pitch.
SCC lost the toss and Selsey elected to bat – an early test for SCC’s fielding skills after the winter layoff!!
Opening bowlers R Dawtrey (1-30) and N Williams (3-25) were accurate and maintained steady pressure on Selsey’s top order, with N Williams making an early break though by dismissing their No.2 batsman for 9. However, a splendid knock of 70 from their No.1 (J.Spiers) together with the steadying influence of the No.3 (A Horner – 34) kept Selsey in the game. It took a stunning forward diving catch by A Court at cover off the bowling of R Fisk to dismiss J Spiers and bring that partnership to an end. A brief period of resistance by Selsey’s no.7 batsman, N Nolan (25) was halted by the bowling of A Court (1-50), a meagre reward for his tireless stint from the top end.
Selsey continued to battle on to make a creditable total of 179 – 7 off their allotted 40 over’s.
On the whole, SCC’s fielding performance was commendably tight but inevitably some early season rust showed through with a few chances dropped but compensated by some fine catches around the ground (Court, Price, Abbott, Stanford (w/k) and Fisk).
SCC’s opener’s A Court (13) and J Abbott (18) made an early impression, scoring steadily against a hostile bowling attack. Ashley was unfortunate to face one that kept low and L Dawtrey (1) was also unlucky to return to the pavilion early. Faced with a potential collapse it required the skipper, G Stanford to regroup SCC’s batting attack with a fine 66 that included 4 majestic 6’s, ably backed up by R Fisk (56) who, to be fair, only got into his stride once he had ditched the Technicolor helmet!
SCC’s score was edging ever closer to Selsey’s total of 179 but with the early loss of L Maloney (1) it was down to P Symons (6*) and S Pegg (7*) to steady the nerves and see us home, with a stylish cover drive for 4 runs, taking SCC’s final total to 183-6 off 33 overs.
A fine all-round performance by SCC complimented by sporting opposition in Selsey CC. Next week we look forward to taking on Graffham away.
