Downland Cup Final 2007
Singleton duly wrapped up an impressive win in the Downland Cup final with
victory by 70 runs over Slindon, after an outstanding batting performance by
George Perry (76) and a miserly bowling performance.
Having won the toss Singleton elected to bat with Perry and Tim Robinson having been in fine form throughout the tournament, but Robinson fell early and when Stanford went with the score on 37 Slindon were right in the game. But Perry, with good support from Mike Lewis (21), smashed the score up to 119 before Lewis was the first of slow left-armer Dick Ball's six victims. Having looked like they could post an unassailable target of close to 200, the Singleton innings faded badly once Perry went, losing 6 wickets while adding just 2 runs, before Jack Davies and Francis Ward finally restored some semblance of normality.
Slindon started well with 6 off the first over, but then Simon Hall (2-12) struck twice and Ward (1-8) claimed a victim to leave the opposition reeling at 8 for 3. It was a position from which they never really recovered as they tried to rebuild the innings without losing wickets, but found runs hard to come by. After the openers had bowled out their five over spells Martin Davies (3-28) and Pete Symonds (3-11) took over and wickets began to fall as Slindon tried desperately to increase the run rate. Hamish McDonald looked briefly threatening, but it was too little too late for a gallant Slindon side.
Slindon's Dick Ball was the Game Set & Match Man of the
Match for his 6-18.
